SEVEN PRINCIPAL INFLUENCES IN MY LIFE
The English transliteration of God's personal name is YHWH, with vowels added, YAHWEH, translated to I AM WHO I AM. The four Hebrew letters transliterated YHWH are:
a Yod, rhymes with "rode", which we transliterate "Y"
a He, rhymes with "say", which we transliterate "H"
a Vav, like "lava", which we transliterate "W" or "V"
another He
No matter what language you use, whether you translate or transliterate, YHWH's name means "I am that I am" and it directly points to His real name, which is the same in all languages.

MARIA FELIX
María Félix (April 8, 1914 - April 8, 2002) was a Mexican actress, one of the icons of the golden era of the Cinema of Mexico. She was commonly known, particularly in her later years, by the honorific La Doña. She was born María de los Ángeles Félix Güereña in Álamos, Sonora, Mexico. There is some dispute regarding Ms. Félix's date of birth. There is a large (but not unanimous) opinion (shared by IMDb) that she was born on April 8, 1914, which means that she died on her 88th birthday. Her beauty and flamboyant personality propelled her to international stardom and icon status, in movies like Woman Without a Soul and La Generala, and especially Doña Bárbara. She refused to work in Hollywood unless she made her grand entrance from the "big door" and not the small roles offered by Cecil B. de Mille Félix stated "I was not born to carry a basket". She married her second husband (1943), the composer Agustín Lara, whom she also divorced in 1947. He wrote many songs for her, among them the famous María Bonita. It has been recorded by many singers including Plácido Domingo. Other song writers also composed songs for her, like María de Todas las Marías by Juan Gabriel. To a reporter that asked her how old she was, Marias responded, look Ms., I have been very busy living my life and had to time to count it. ".
(*16) PAC wes the most prominent Puerto Rican political figure of the 20th century, a National Hero who sacrificed his life for the freedom of his country. Under his direction, the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico became a major force in the fight for independence. A powerful speaker, thousands would gather to listen to his passionate discourses of freedom.)

Julia de Burgos
Julia de Burgos (February 17, 1914 – July 6, 1953) is considered by many as the greatest poet to have been born in Puerto Rico, [1][2]and along with Gabriela Mistral, is considered as one of the greatest poets of Latin America. She he was also an advocate for the independence of Puerto Rico and an ardent civil rights activist for women and African/Afro-Caribbean writers.
Julia de Burgos was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on February 17, 1914. She was raised in a poor section of Carolina called Barrio Santa Cruz. Her family's poverty did not keep her from developing a love for nature and her country. She was very fortunate to be able to attend school, since she came from a very large family of thirteen children.
Burgos graduated at the age of nineteen from the University of Puerto Rico with a degree in teaching. She became a teacher, but her love for literature led her to write poetry. Among her early influences were Luis Llorens Torres, Clara Lair, Rafael Alberti and Pablo Neruda. Her inspiration came from her love of Puerto Rico and as noted in her first work El Rio Grande de Loiza.

Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter, who has achieved great international popularity. She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of Mexico as well as by European influences that include Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. Many of her works are self-portraits that symbolically express her own pain and sexuality. In 1929 Kahlo married the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. They shared political views, and he encouraged her artistic endeavors.Although she has long been recognized as an important painter, public awareness of her work has become more widespread since the 1970s. Her "Blue" house in Coyoacán, Mexico City is a museum, donated by Diego Rivera upon his death in 1957.

KAHLIL GIBRAN
ON GIVING
Then said a rich man,
"Speak to us of Giving."
And he answered:
You give but little
when you give of your possessions.
It is when you give of yourself
that you truly give.
For what are your possessions
but things you keep and guard
for fear you may need them tomorrow?
And tomorrow,
what shall tomorrow bring
to the over prudent dog burying bones
in the trackless sand
as he follows the pilgrims
to the holy city?
And what is fear of need
but need itself?
Is not dread of thirst
when your well is full,
thirst that is unquenchable?
There are those who give little
of the much which they have -
and they give it for recognition
and their hidden desire
makes their gifts unwholesome.
And there are those
who have little and give it all.
These are the believers in life
and the bounty of life,
and their coffer is never empty.
There are those who give with joy,
and that joy is their reward.
And there are those who give with pain,
and that pain is their baptism.
And there are those who give
and know not pain in giving,
nor do they seek joy,
nor give with mindfulness of virtue;
They give as in yonder valley
the myrtle breathes
its fragrance into space.
Though the hands of such
as these God speaks,
and from behind their eyes
He smiles upon the earth.
It is well to give when asked,
but it is better to give unasked,
through understanding;
And to the open-handed
the search for one who shall receive
is joy greater than giving
And is there aught you would withhold?
All you have shall some day be given;
Therefore give now,
that the season of giving may be yours
and not your inheritors'.
You often say,
"I would give, but only to the deserving."
The trees in your orchard say not so,
nor the flocks in your pasture.
They give that they may live,
for to withhold is to perish.
Surely he who is worthy to receive
his days and his nights
is worthy of all else from you.
And he who has deserved to drink
from the ocean of life
deserves to fill his cup from your little stream.
And what desert greater shall there be
than that which lies in the courage
and the confidence, nay the charity, of receiving?
And who are you that men should rend
their bosom and unveil their pride,
that you may see their worth naked
and their pride unabashed?
See first that you yourself
deserve to be a giver,
and an instrument of giving.
For in truth it is life that gives unto life -
while you, who deem yourself a giver,
are but a witness.
And you receivers -
and you are all receivers -
assume no weight of gratitude,
Rather rise together with the giver
on his gifts as on wings;
For to be over mindful of your debt,
is to doubt his generosity
who has the free-hearted earth for mother,
and God for father.
On Love
Then said Almitra, "Speak to us of Love."
And he raised his head and looked upon the people,
and there fell a stillness upon them.
And with a great voice he said:
When love beckons to you follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden
among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses
your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots a
nd shake them in their clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire,
that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you
that you may know the secrets of your heart,
and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
But if in your fear you would seek
only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover
your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh,
but not all of your laughter,
and weep,
but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself
and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say,
"God is in my heart," but rather,
I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love,
if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires,
let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook
that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart
and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer
for the beloved in your heart
and a song of praise upon your lips.
ON PLEASURE
Then a hermit, who visited the city once a year,
came forth and said, "Speak to us of Pleasure."
And he answered, saying:
Pleasure is a freedom song,
But it is not freedom.
It is the blossoming of your desires,
But it is not their fruit.
It is a depth calling unto a height,
But it is not the deep nor the high.
It is the caged taking wing,
But it is not space encompassed.
And, in very truth, pleasure is a freedom-song.
And I fain would have you sing it with fullness of heart;
yet I would not have you lose your hearts in the singing.
Some of your youth seek pleasure as if it were all,
and they are judged and rebuked.
I would not judge nor rebuke them. I would have them seek.
For they shall find pleasure, but not her alone:
Seven are her sisters,
and the least of them is more beautiful than pleasure.
Have you not heard of the man
who was digging in the earth for roots
and found a treasure?
And some of your elders remember
pleasures with regret like wrongs
committed in drunkenness.
But regret is the beclouding of the mind
and not its chastisement.
They should remember their pleasures with gratitude,
as they would the harvest of a summer.
Yet if it comforts them to regret, let them be comforted.
And there are among you those
who are neither young to seek nor old to remember;
And in their fear of seeking
and remembering they shun all pleasures,
lest they neglect the spirit or offend against it.
But even in their foregoing is their pleasure.
And thus they too find a treasure
though they dig for roots with quivering hands.
But tell me,
who is he that can offend the spirit?
Shall the nightingale offend
the stillness of the night,
or the firefly the stars?
And shall your flame or
your smoke burden the wind?
Think you the spirit is a still pool
which you can trouble with a staff?
Oftentimes in denying yourself pleasure
you do but store the desire
in the recesses of your being.
Who knows but that
which seems omitted today,
waits for tomorrow?
Even your body knows its heritage
and its rightful need and will not be deceived.
And your body is the harp of your soul,
And it is yours to bring forth
sweet music from it or confused sounds.
And now you ask in your heart,
"How shall we distinguish that
which is good in pleasure
from that which is not good?"
Go to your fields and your gardens,
and you shall learn that it is the pleasure
of the bee to gather honey of the flower,
But it is also the pleasure
of the flower to yield its honey to the bee.
For to the bee a flower is a fountain of life,
And to the flower a bee is a messenger of love,
And to both, bee and flower,
the giving and the receiving of pleasure
is a need and an ecstasy.
People of Orphalese,
be in your pleasures
like the flowers and the bees.
ON MARRIAGE
Then Almitra spoke again and said,
"And what of Marriage, master?"
And he answered saying:
You were born together,
and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together
when white wings of death scatter your days.
Aye, you shall be together
even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens
dance between you.
Love one another
but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea
between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup
but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread
but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous,
but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone
though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts,
but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life
can contain your hearts.
And stand together,
yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow
not in each other's shadow.
ON RELIGION
And an old priest said,
"Speak to us of Religion."
And he said:
Have I spoken this day of aught else?
Is not religion all deeds and all reflection,
And that which is neither
deed nor reflection,
but a wonder and
a surprise ever springing in the soul,
even while the hands hew
the stone or tend the loom?
Who can separate his faith from his actions,
or his belief from his occupations?
Who can spread his hours before him,
saying, "This for God and this for myself;
This for my soul, and this other for my body?"
All your hours are wings
that beat through space from self to self.
He who wears his morality
but as his best garment were better naked.
The wind and the sun will tear no holes in his skin.
And he who defines his conduct by ethics
imprisons his song-bird in a cage.
The freest song comes not through bars and wires.
And he to whom worshipping is a window,
to open but also to shut,
has not yet visited the house of his soul
whose windows are from dawn to dawn.
Your daily life is
your temple and your religion.
Whenever you enter into it
take with you your all.
Take the plough and the forge
and the mallet and the lute,
The things you have fashioned
in necessity or for delight.
For you cannot rise
above your achievements
nor fall lower than your failures.
And take with you all men:
For in adoration you cannot fly higher
than their hopes
nor humble yourself
lower than their despair.
And if you would know God
be not therefore a solver of riddles.
Rather look about you
and you shall see Him
playing with your children.
And look into space;
you shall see Him walking in the cloud,
outstretching His arms
in the lightning and descending in rain.
You shall see Him smiling in flowers,
then rising and waving His hands in trees.
ON PRAYER
Then a priestess said,
"Speak to us of Prayer."
And he answered, saying:
You pray in your distress
and in your need;
would that you might pray also
in the fullness of your joy
and in your days of abundance.
For what is prayer
but the expansion of yourself
into the living ether?
And if it is for your comfort
to pour your darkness into space,
it is also for your delight
to pour forth the dawning of your heart.
And if you cannot but weep
when your soul summons you to prayer,
she should spur you again and yet again,
though weeping,
until you shall come laughing.
When you pray you rise to meet in the air
those who are praying at that very hour,
and whom save in prayer you may not meet.
Therefore let your visit to that temple
invisible be for naught
but ecstasy and sweet communion.
For if you should enter the temple
for no other purpose
than asking you shall not receive.
And if you should enter into it
to humble yourself you shall not be lifted:
Or even if you should enter into it
to beg for the good of others
you shall not be heard.
It is enough that you enter the temple invisible.
I cannot teach you how to pray in words.
God listens not to your words
save when He Himself
utters them through your lips.
And I cannot teach you the prayer of the seas
and the forests and the mountains.
But you who are born of the mountains
and the forests and the seas
can find their prayer in your heart.
And if you but listen in the stillness of the night
you shall hear them saying in silence,
"Our God,
who art our winged self,
it is thy will in us that willeth.
It is thy desire in us that desireth.
It is thy urge in us
that would turn our nights,
which are thine,
into days which are thine also.
We cannot ask thee for aught,
for thou knowest our needs
before they are born in us:
Thou art our need; and in giving us more of thyself thou givest us all."LOVE IS THE SECRET

REMEMBER . . .
Enjoy Perfect Photography --- Catch the moment . Remember the buddy system... because two have more fun than one! Take time once in a while to just enjoy the moment... When someone tries to surprise you, let them think they got away with it. Don't worry about what you see in the mirror, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder... Remember, your mother thinks you're cute.. even if no one else does. Always try to do what you are taught, it can sometimes lead to beautiful things... Try to give a gentle lift to a friend in need... Search for the best route to what you're hoping for... No goal is too hard to attain when you persevere... Sometimes it's better to watch from a distance and plan your next move carefully... Get to know someone first before accepting that s/he may be your enemy... Be careful what you put into your body, health is too important to ignore... Present yourself well and mind your manners... Remember, no matter how much you resemble your siblings, you are still unique! Taking a power nap from time to time can put you back in the pink! Whenever possible, jump and clap for joy! Always keep in mind that the world is filled with marvels... You never know what awaits around the next bend!

first look: national city tower lofts
Posted: 30 Jul 2008 03:35 PM CDT
Another anchor to the triangular patch of neighborhood surrounding Spring and Main will soon be National City Tower Lofts, a project which like it’s slightly skinnier friend across the street, has maintained a low profile until now.
Its equally low-key developer, a private family operating under the legal name National City Towers LLC, expects to deliver the 93-unit loft conversion by early September. (According to reps, the company also owns the Broadway Trade Center a couple blocks away and has plans to convert the behemoth structure into 600 lofts in the near future.)
The 12-story former bank building has been refitted with a variety of residential floor plans ranging from 617 to 1,884 square-feet, priced to rent as low as $2.26 per square-foot up to over $3.00 for two-story penthouse. Luxury finishes, spacious storage rooms and ample resident amenities on the roof and first basement level will offer a competitive edge over the neighboring Great Republic condos.
A large footprint with street frontage on three sides of the building will make way for 5 to 6 commercial tenants, the first being vegetarian haven Infusion Cafe set to open this fall.

Four penthouse units will have private decks which integrate with the rooftop.
Other Areas of the Building
Elevator lobbies on each floor are highlighted with designer touches.
Resident corridors are decorated with contemporary color schemes and unique pieces of art.
The historic lobby spans from Spring to Main streets and features many original building details such a canopy ceiling, marble surfaces and wrought iron elevator doors.
10,000 SF of dual-level retail will encompass 5-6 commercial spaces, including a possible 2,000 SF restaurant and the upcoming Infusion Cafe.
A fitness center, media room, billiards tables and a 2,800 SF resident lounge will fill now empty spaces in the upper basement level.
Like most of the basement area, the building’s original bank vault will be used for tenant storage.

ERICKA'S SUBMISSIONS
You are worth the discomfort and frustration
that you'll regularly need to get through.
You are worth the pain that
the world will sometimes offer.
For within you is the capacity
for great joy and astounding achievement.
Within you are beautiful and worthy
dreams that long to be fulfilled.
You are one of a kind and you are
filled with a driving purpose.
You are worth whatever it takes
to give that special purpose
a lasting and meaningful expression.
Yes, the disappointments,
inconveniences, pains,
problems and annoyances
will surely and steadily come.
Yet they are indeed
quite trivial compared
to the precious possibilities
that live within you.
Make whatever efforts necessary,
endure whatever setbacks you must,
move forward through whatever
challenges may come along.
For there is no question that
you are worth it.
"Whatever you can do or believe you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it." -- Goethe PEACE It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart. -- Author Unknown

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.
His bed was next to the room ' s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end.
They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.
Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it in his mind ' s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Days, weeks and months passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.
She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."
Epilogue: There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can ' t buy. "Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present."NO ONE LEFT TO SPEAK UP FOR ME
A WEDDING GIFT FOR MY DAUGHTER
STRANGE
- Isn't it strange how a 20-dollar-bill seems like such a large amount when you donate it to church, but such a small amount when you go shopping?
- how 2 hours seem so long when you're at church, and how short they seem when you're watching a good movie?
- that you can't find a word to say when you're praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend?
- how difficult and boring it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a popular novel or book?
- how everyone wants front-row-tickets to concerts or games, but they do whatever is possible to sit at the last row in church?
- how we need to know about an event for Church 2-3 weeks before the day so we can include it in our agenda, but we can adjust it for other events at the last minute?
- how difficult it is to learn a fact about God to share it with others, but how easy it is to learn, understand, extend and repeat gossip?
- how we believe everything that magazines and newspapers say, but we question the words in the Bible?
- how everyone wants a place in heaven, but they don't want to believe, do, or say anything to get there?
- how we send jokes in e-mails and they are forwarded right away; but, when we are going to send messages about God, we think about it twice before we share it with others?
- How strange it is-isn't it, that this can be deleted by this blog?

OFFICE PARTY INVITATION
FROM: Asi Locreo, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: July 01, 2008 RE: Holiday Party (planning five months ahead)
I'm happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take place on December 23, starting at noon in the private function room at the Grill House. There will be a cash bar and plenty of drinks! We'll have a small band playing traditional carols...feel free to sing along. And don't be surprised if our CEO shows up dressed as Santa Claus! A Christmas tree will be lit at 1:00 pm. Exchange of gifts among employees can be done at that time; however, no gift should be over $10.00 to make the giving of gifts easy for everyone's pockets. This gathering is only for employees! Our CEO will make a special announcement at that time! Merry Christmas to you and your family. Asi
FROM: Asi Locreo, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: July 02, 2008 RE: Holiday Party In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees. We recognize that Chanukah is an important holiday, which often coincides with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year. However, from now on we're calling it our "Holiday Party." The same policy applies to any other employees who are not Christians or those still celebrating Reconciliation Day. There will be no Christmas tree present. No Christmas carols sung. We will have other types of music for your enjoyment. Happy now? Happy Holidays to you and your family.

FROM: Asi Locreo, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: July 03, 2008 RE: Holiday Party Regarding the note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous requesting a non-drinking table ... you didn't sign your name. I'm happy to accommodate this request, but if I put a sign on a table that reads, "AA Only"; you wouldn't be anonymous anymore. How am I supposed to handle this? Somebody? Anybody? Forget about the gifts exchange, no gifts exchange are allowed since the union members feel that $10.00 is too much money and executives believe $10.00 is a little chintzy. NO GIFTS EXCHANGE WILL BE ALLOWED. Asi
FROM: Asi Locreo, Human Resources Director To: All Employees DATE: July 04, 2008 RE: Holiday Party What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20 begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during daylight hours. There goes the party! Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees' beliefs. Perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until the end of the party- or else package everything for you to take it home in little foil doggy baggy. Will that work? Meanwhile, I've arranged for members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet and pregnant women will get the table closest to the restrooms. Gays are allowed to sit with each other. Lesbians do not have to sit with Gay men, each will have their own table. Yes, there will be flower arrangement for the Gay men's table. To the person asking permission to cross dress, no cross-dressing allowed though. We will have booster seats for short people. Low-fat food will be available for those on a diet. We cannot control the salt used in the food we suggest for those people with high blood pressure to taste first. There will be fresh fruits as dessert for Diabetics, the restaurant cannot supply "No Sugar" desserts. Sorry! Did I miss anything?!?!? Asi
FROM: Asi Locreo, Human Resources Director TO: All F******g Employees DATE: July 05, 2008 RE: The F******g Holiday Party Vegetarian dckheads I've had it with you people!!! We're going to keep this party at the Grill House whether you like it or not, so you can sit quietly at the table furthest from the "grill of death," as you so quaintly put it, and you'll get your f******g salad bar, including organic tomatoes. But you know, tomatoes have feelings, too. They scream when you slice them. I've heard them scream. I'm hearing them scream right NOW! I hope you all have a rotten holiday! Drive drunk and die, The Btch from HELL!!!!!!!!
FROM: A.M.O.R., Acting Human Resources Director DATE: July 06, 2008 RE: Asi Locreo and the Holiday Party I'm sure I speak for all of us in wishing my mother a speedy recovery and I'll continue to forward your cards to her. In the meantime, management has decided to cancel our Holiday Party and give everyone the afternoon of the 23rd off with full pay!
PUZZLES
1-Bulbs
This is one of my favorite logic puzzles. Imagine you are in a room with 3 switches. In an adjacent room there are 3 bulbs (all are off at the moment), each switch belongs to one bulb. It is impossible to see from one room to another. How can you find out which switch belongs to which bulb, if you may enter the room with the bulbs only once?
A table tennis ball fell into a tight deep pipe. The pipe was only a bit wider then the ball, so you can not use your hand. How would you take it out, with no damage?
3-The Man in the Elevator
A man lives on the tenth floor of a building. Every morning he takes the elevator down to the lobby and leaves the building. In the evening, he gets into the elevator, and, if there is someone else in the elevator - or if it was raining that day - he goes back to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the seventh floor and walks up three flights of stairs to his apartment. Can you explain why? (This is probably the best known and most celebrated of all lateral thinking logic puzzles. It is a true classic. Although there are many possible solutions which fit the initial conditions, only the canonical answer is truly satisfying.)
4-Ball
How can you throw a ball as hard as you can and have it come back to you, even if it doesn't hit anything, there is nothing attached to it, and no one else catches or throws it?
5-Magnet
This is a logic puzzle published in Martin Gardner's column in the Scientific American. You are in a room where there are no metal objects except for two iron rods. Only one of them is a magnet. How can you identify this magnet?
6-Castle
A square medieval castle on a square island was under siege. All around the island, there was a 10 metre wide water moat. But the conquerors could make foot-bridges only 9.5 metres long. Nevertheless a wise man was able to figure out how to get over the water. What do you think was his advice? (There's a place on the other side to put the bridge against, not just a sheer wall. the water moat has square corners - that section of the moat is about 14.1 metres wide.)
7-Biology
Let's say some primitive organisms divide themselves every minute in two equal parts which also divide the next minute and so on. The saucer in which we started observing this process was full at 12.00. When was it half full?
8-Sheikh's Heritage
An Arab sheikh tells his two sons to race their camels to a distant city to see who will inherit his fortune. The one whose camel is slower will win. The brothers, after wandering aimlessly for days, ask a wise man for advice. After hearing the advice they jump on the camels and race as fast as they can to the city. What does the wise man say?
9-Philosopher's Clock
This is an old logic puzzle. One philosopher had a clock, which he had forgotten to wind up. He had no other clock, watch, radio, TV, phone or any other device telling the time. So when his clock stopped he went to a friend, stayed there the whole night and when he came home, he knew the right time. How could he know?
10-Masters of Logic Puzzles I. (dots)
Three masters of logic wanted to find out who was the wisest one. So they invited the grand master, who took them into a dark room and said: "I will paint each one of you a red or a blue dot on your forehead. When you walk out and you see at least one red point, raise your hands. The one who says what colour is the dot on his own forehead first, wins." Then he painted only red dots on every one. When they went out everybody had their hands up and after a while one of them said: "I have a red dot on my head." How could he be so sure?
11-Masters of Logic Puzzles II. (hats)
The two losing masters wanted a riposte, so the grand master showed them 5 hats, two white and three black. Then he said: "I will turn off the light and put a hat on each of your heads and hide the other hats. When I turn on the light you will have equal chances to win. Each of you will see the hats of the two others, however not his own. The first one saying the colour of his hat will win." Then before he could turn off the light, one of the masters (the same one again) guessed, what the colour of his hat will be. What hat was it and how did he know?
12-Masters of Logic Puzzles III. (stamps)
Try this. The grand master takes a set of 8 stamps, 4 red and 4 green, known to the logicians, and loosely affixes two to the forehead of each logician so that each logician can see all the other stamps except those 2 in the moderator's pocket and the two on her own head. He asks them in turn if they know the colors of their own stamps:
A: "No." B: "No." C: "No." A: "No." B: "Yes."
What are the colors of her stamps, and what is the situation?
13-Head Bands
Three white men were taken captive by a hostile Indian tribe. The chieftain was willing to let them go so he took them to a tepee, where there was no light. He put one head band on each of their heads (he had 3 white and 2 red - so 2 head bands were not used). Then they went out in a queue so that each man saw the head-band of those standing in front of himself (the first one did not see any head band, the second one saw the first one's head band, and the third one saw the head bands of the two others). If somebody said the colour of his head-band, they all would be free. After a quiet while one of them said: "My head-band is ...". What colour was his head band? And how would you reason it?
14-Christmas Tree
There were 4 angels on a Christmas tree (besides other frou-frou). Two had a blue aureole and two yellow, however none of them can see behind his head. Angel A is on the highest place and he can see angels B and C, which hang below him. Below hangs angel B, who can see only angel C under him. Angel C can't see anybody, because angel D hangs under a twig (nobody can see him and he can not see anyone either). Which one of them will be the first to guess what his own aureole is?
ON LOVE
Then I said, "Speak to us of Love."
And he raised his head and looked upon the people,
and there fell a stillness upon them.
And with a great voice he said:
When love beckons to you follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses
your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots
and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire,
that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you
that you may know the secrets of your heart,
and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
But if in your fear you would seek
only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness
and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh,
but not all of your laughter,
and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself
and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart,"
but rather, I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love,
if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires,
let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook
that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart
and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips. Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet.Saturday, May 31, 2008

MY GRANDSON SEBASTIAN
On ChildrenAnd a woman who held a babe against her bosom said,
"Speak to us of Children."
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.
